The Shooting of Saban Habibovic

Around 5 a.m. on April 15th, a 911 call was placed at truck stop near Marengo. The caller alleged there was a man at the stop that was attempting to sell electronic equipment to those at the truck stop.

Hampshire police officer Eric Pate arrived on scene demanding the man, Saban Habibovic, to stop.

It’s alleged Saban got into his vehicle and drove towards the police and left the scene. Pate and another Hampshire cop fired four total shots at the fleeing car.

A high speed chase ensued extending over multiple jurisdictions.

The chase reached 100 mph and lasted roughly an hour.

The chase first went up to Fulton, Wisconsin, where Saban’s car flipped.

Saban exited his car and quickly carjacked a black Honda Ciivic.

Now he turned and headed back to Illinois before he lost control of the car and hit a semi on the Rockton Road exit on I-90.

It’s alleged that Saban then unsuccessfully attempted to carjack a Ford F150.

He continued down the exit ramp with a pipe and knife in hand which led to more 911 calls. A Winnebago County Sheriff deputy and three Roscoe police officers responded to the call.

They found Saban along walking along Rockton Road and exited their vehicles. Saban allegedly had the knife and pipe in his hands still and lunged towards the officers.

Roscoe police officer Teri Swenson fired three shots - hitting Saban once in the stomach.

This was the first Winnebago County police shooting in 2003 and fifth in the 2000’s.
