Our struggles are connected.
This is not just a cute phrase - it’s the foundation From Rockford was built on.
It is not the belief that ‘oh bad things happen to me, bad things happen to you, we should work together.’ It takes solidarity to another step when examining the violences that affect all of us directly and indirectly.
For example, take SupplyCore. A lot of people have seen the building on the west end of the Jefferson Street Bridge, maybe you’ve seen the mayor and police chief rappelling down it, but the majority of Rockford are unsure what exactly they do.
That ignorance is purposeful. If the people of Rockford knew how this billion-dollar corporation made its fortune, the people would've driven it out long ago.
SupplyCore is a defense contractor supplying the U.S. and its allies weapons, vehicles, materials maintenance, and surveillance equipment. Anytime you hear war, “conflict”, genocide, or bloodshed, know that SupplyCore is making millions off of it in some way.
The clearest example of this is the direct role SupplyCore has in the genocide of Palestinians. SupplyCore provides the Israel Defense Force with weapons, tactical gear, equipment for military bases, vehicles, surveillance equipment, and maintenance for all things listed.
Israel acquires these resources with the specific genocidal intent.
SupplyCore also has contracts with the United Arab Emirates that fund the genocide in Sudan.
When you hear bloodshed, war crimes, genocide, know that SupplyCore has a significant hand in funding that terror.
So who is behind SupplyCore?
Peter Provenzano has been the CEO for the past 26 years. His company funds terror abroad, and his other projects fund terror locally.
Provenzano is the President of the Rock River Development Partnership (RRDP) - a local nonprofit. Their biggest success is creating Rockford City Market.
Prior to 2020, City Market felt like an event specifically for white Rockford. There were very few nonwhite people in attendance and a rare nonwhite vendor. This wasn’t due to a lack of black and brown vendor applications but a seemingly pattern of denial for nonwhite vendors.
When we get to 2020, after the murder of George Floyd, there were protests all throughout Rockford. At times targeting known racist businesses, other times going to wherever the people were.
City Market responded to these protests with the full force of every police department in the county. 33 people were arrested (some more than once) from July 31st, 2020 - September 25, 2020 ((I was arrested three times during that time span)).
Multiple minors were pepper-sprayed in the face by Winnebago County Sheriff’s Deputies. Women were slammed unconscious by RPD officers. A 13-year-old girl was snatched off her bike as she tried to go home after the protest. City Market patrons, and vendors, were allowed to spew racial slurs, attack protestors, and cheer on their arrests.
All this was happening under the watchful eyes of top City administrator Todd Cagnoni, and the Provenzano-led Rock River Development Partnership Board. They were watching the protests outside City Market from The Standard rooftop while keeping an eye on livestreams from the protest. They had a direct line of communication to the cops on the ground and were directing them towards specific individuals.
The Struggle for Rockford Liberation is tied to the struggles abroad. The same people making millions if not billions off the genocide in Palestine, Sudan, Congo, have a direct hand in the oppression of Rockford Revolution. We will not know freedom until our brothers and sisters abroad know it as well.
Liberation will know all of us when our connected struggles are bonded together stronger than the chains that oppress us.
