On September 8th, 1992, Moses Lawrence, an 18 year old was with his girlfriend at the time on the north side of Rockford in an alley off Brown Avenue. Both were students of Harlem High School at the time.
It was reported that emotions were high between the two as the relationship was ending. Police were called and Rockford police officers Ted Getty and David Dominguez responded to the scene.
Moses repeated throughout the police interaction that he was just trying to talk to his girlfriend. At some point, Moses let it be known that he had a .22 on him.
The Rockford cops drew their guns and the girlfriend was able to get to safety. Moses threatened to shoot himself with the RPD guns still pointed at him.
He raised his gun and shot himself in the thigh. Getty in immediate response shot Moses in the chest.
Moses survived both shots and was charged with reckless conduct, unlawful use of weapons, and possession of a firearm without proper identification.
