The Shooting of Jonathan Allen

This is an excerpt from a local news articles written by Mike Wiser about an event, during which Jonathan Allen was shot by RPD officers:

“A man who says he was shot and beaten by police officers has settled his lawsuit sought in excess $100,000 from the city.

Jonathan Allen, 45, sued members of the Rockford Police Department tactical unit in 2003 based on a 2000 incident in which he said officers violated his civil rights.

According to his lawsuit, undercover officers approached Allen while he was standing near the intersection of Eighth Street and Sixth Avenue at about 2:15 am on Dec. 21 2000.

Allen said the police did not identify themselves as officers and Allen feared for his safety when they approached him, so he ran.

That’s when Randy Berke and Jason Bailey fired a total of eight shots from their guns at the plaintiff, with one of those striking the defendant in the lower right leg causing him pain and suffering and causing him to fall to the ground.

After being shot, four officers without cause or provocation severely beat the plaintiff on his face, head, left and right sides of his body, causing abrasions and other injuries.”

This was the first shooting in 2000’s.
