The Murder of Hugo

Pena

Around 7 p.m. on September 29th, 1993, Hugo Pena attempted to enter the Logli at 8010 N. 2nd Street with a German Shepherd by his side.

Three store employees were quick to engage in a scuffle to push Hugo out of Logli. A 911 call was made from inside the store.

Hugo upon leaving was seen banging a traffic pole nearby. A separate 911 call was made based on this activity leading to Greg Leombruni, a Winnebago County Sheriff deputy out of the Machesney park unit responded to the scene.

Leombruni got out of the squad car leading to Hugo running with his dog. The foot chase ended when Leombruni shot Hugo once in the chest. After the shooting, the deputy approached Hugo’s fallen body and maced the German Shepherd.

Hugo was pronounced dead at Rockford Memorial Hospital at 7:30 p.m.

This was the third police shooting in Winnebago County in 1993.
