The Killing of Kenneth Smith

In the evening of October 23rd, 1997, Kenneth Smith was suspected of trying to steal from IGA

Grays on Broadway.


Kenneth reportedly left the store and a store employee followed him while on making a 911 call. Later, a civilian in a van joined to follow Kenneth while in communication with police.


The weaponization of the police, the efforts these individuals went to all for someone allegedly trying to steal.


Three police officers, Chris Aldrich, Vernon Sims and Jeff Schroeder, would arrive and with the help of the aforementioned individuals, follow Kenneth.


After following Kenneth for a short period of time, it's reported that he turned around and faced the officers.


When he turned around, it's alleged that he pulled out a knife. There was about fifteen-twenty feet between Kenneth and the officers.

"You're going to have to shoot me."

Kenneth Smith reportedly said this.


Kenneth allegedly lunged towards Aldrich. Aldrich and Sims both fired at Kenneth but Aldrich’s gun jammed.


This was Vernon Sims second shooting in four years. For each he got put on paid administrative leave for three days before returning to work.


This was the second police shooting in 1997 in Winnebago County.


This was the 12th police shooting in Winnebago County - all have been justified.
