Mark Castronovo #1936

Mark Castronovo has been a Rockford Police officer since March 1999.

On November 3rd, 2003, Castronovo was working a shift with Todd Murr.

Murr's parents had recently reported that a vehicle of theirs was stolen the day prior.

Murr and Castronovo reportedly found the vehicle driving on Winnebago and State Street. Both officers got out of the squad car and pointed their guns towards the driver of the vehicle.

It's alleged that the driver, James Gerth, sped in the direction of the officers. In response, Murr shot four shots into the car.

Three of the bullets hit James in the head and the other in the arm. He was killed immediately, but the vehicle kept moving.

It wouldn't stop until going through a crowded parking lot, hitting a parked car, and finally coming to rest after crashing into a building.

Castronovo was one of the officers who testified in the case against Anthony Ross. The case would eventually be overturned due to admitted police misconduct by Doug Palmer.

In 2003, Castronovo was named in a personal injury lawsuit.

In 2015, Castronovo, along with D'evyron Boone and Adam Dreger, responded to a welfare check at the president of the Rockford NAACP house
