Jeffrey Oberts

Jeffrey Oberts has been a Rockford Police officer since April 2000.


On October 16th, 2007, Oberts and Cheryl Buntjer responded to an armed robbery call.


There was a card game happening on Kishwaukee street. Two armed robbers ran in on the game demanding money.


One of the robbers ran from the game and into the parking lot as Oberts and Buntjer were arriving. 80-year-old Vaughn “Curly Fitzgerald the owner of the building and allegedly running the game chased after the robber with a rifle. Curly Fitzgerald shot the robber then turned towards the police.


Oberts and Buntjer both shot and killed Vaughn Curly Fitzgerald.
