Guilty on both counts.

On December 30th, 2018, Lawler with Irvin Benitez and Brandon Wells responded to a welfare check saying a black man was moving furniture from his house to the street.

The three officers noted in their reports Kerry Blake’s “diminished mental capacity.”

Kerry Blake’s mental health crisis continued throughout the day. Hours later, Kerry would allegedly take a neighbor’s vehicle that was the same make, model and color as a family member’s vehicle.

Unbeknownst to Kerry at the time, there were children in the back of the vehicle. Kerry drove little more than a block away before stopping the vehicle and letting the children go.

Kerry returned to his house were his crisis spiraled.

When officers responded to the 911 call Lawler and Wells returned to the Blake household. Lawler and Wells informed officers of the earlier incident as well as past instances of Kerry Blake and his struggles with mental health.
