James Nachampassack has been a Rockford police officer since 2016.
In June of 2020, Nachampassack was one of the police officers that responded to a traffic stop involving a non-binary protestor then known as Sage.
After Sage exited the vehicle in a nonviolent manner, they were immediately taken to the ground and repeatedly punched in the face by Rockford Police officers Frank Fabiani, who has since been charged with a separate on duty battery, and Alexander Fuller.
Upon Nachampassack’s arrival, it is alleged that he began to record this incident on his personal phone while he and other RPD officers made homophobic and transphobic remarks.
When Sage realized Nachampassack was recording for his personal use, they began to yell for him to stop recording. Nachampassack then began to hold Sage’s head down on the ground while officers retrieved a “spit mask”.
Nachampassack then forced that “spit mask” over Sage’s head.
All charges pressed against Sage were dropped.
