Daniel Kutz has been a Rockford police officer since 2017. Prior to becoming a Rockford police officer he was a longtime South Beloit cop.
Kutz was named in a lawsuit alleging misconduct as a South Beloit cop.
On October 9th, 2015, Kutz arrived to Motorheards Autoservice owned by a 72 year old woman. There was a business dispute between and a man who had brought in his 1978 Porsche into the shop for significant body work.
When the work was done, the man arrived and said he would not be paying for it and still demanding his car which the woman responded that he could have the car right after he paid.
Kutz tried convincing the woman to give up the car without any payment even threatening her saying the only way she would avoid arrest is if she gave up the car. The woman asked for both men to leave and began to close the garage door as Kutz and the man were near it. Kutz reportedly stopped the door from closing, fabricated a story of the door hitting the man in the head, and arrested the 72 year old woman on battery charges.
After review, the prosecutor dropped the charge. Kutz resigned shortly after to join the Rockford Police Department.
On February 6th, 2019, Kutz and Adam Cox responded to the shooting of Randy Pierson by then Rockford Police Timothy Stec on Highway 20.
Kutz spoke to the occupant in the vehicle closest to the scene. The occupant did not see or hear any shots being fired, but he did witness a cop drop a magazine to reload with their gun pointed at the driver’s door of a pick up truck.
Kutz has worked several protests since 2020 in various roles.
On August 28th, 2020, Kutz was assigned to work the City Market Protests. During this event, multiple individuals were pulled off the sidewalk by RPD officers and charged with Mob Action. Kutz, grabbed a protester off the sidewalk, tackled them to the ground, then punched them.
The case against the protester was dismissed.
Most recently Kutz was part of a dozen plus officers who responded to the RPS 205 School Board meeting after a increased attendance following the video release of a 14 year old freshman being slammed unconscious in the hallways of Auburn High School by a Rockford Police officer.
