Carl Bergstrom has been Rockford police department officer since February 2008. He has mainly worked as a K-9 cop.

On December 30, 2018, Bergstrom and his K-9, Dax, responded to the standoff at the Blake household.

Bergstrom was present for hours during the standoff that was initiated while Kerry Blake was undergoing a mental health crisis. Blake had previously been diagnosed, and officers were aware of the troubles he had with his mental health.

Eventually, late into the night, SWAT team officers snuck into the Blake house through the back door. Matthew Krantz shot and killed Kerry Blake.

After the killing, Bergstrom blocked off unauthorized persons from getting to the scene.
