Brandon Mather has been a Rockford police officer since 2014.
He has worked as a community resource officer.
The Occupation began on Saturday, October 3rd, 2020, in the back lot of City Hall in direct response to Rockford police officer Dominik McNiece shot an unarmed 20 year old Tyris Jones in the back.
On Monday, October 5th, 2020, Mather was assigned to respond to the Occupation at Rockford City Hall.
In the morning, Mather approached the protesters as back up for public works director Kyle Saunders. Mather can be seen on video stroking his baton in hand.
Saunders instructed that everyone needed to either leave or go to designated protest area. Three protesters stayed in the bottom of the stairwell and were arrested for criminal trespassing and obstruction. One protester had their case dismissed, one was found not guilty after a bench trial and another still has their charges pending.
Later in the afternoon, responding to orders from then assistant deputy chief Carla Redd, Mather and Branden Burke arrested a protestor after she temporarily left the designated protest area to retrieve an item from a car. Mather tackled the protestor to the ground and swung her head into a pole.
Mather faced no repercussions for his violence.
