Branden Burke has been a Rockford police officer since 2012.
Per the City of Rockford website, Burke is a community service officer over district 1.
Burke, under the Community Services Unit, was assigned to work City Market Protest in 2020. The protests began in an attempt to raise awareness to the local police violence that took place outside Rockford Police District 1 during the first protest in Rockford following the murder of George Floyd.
Burke has participated in at least six arrests of protesters.
1. July 31st, 2020, - first arrests week at City Market
2. August 7th, 2020, - City Market - arrested a man for walking in the crosswalk.
3. August 21st, 2020, - City Market - Burke assisted in two arrests. First, one initiated by Kyle Parr and Mike Dalke. After the protester was taken to the ground due to a leg sweep by Parr, Burke helped get the protester in handcuffs
Later in the night, Burke arrested a man after he stuck up both middle fingers to cops.
4. August 28th, 2020, - City Market - was part of six officers that took a couple to the ground. Burke held the left side of one protesters down on the ground while officers got on top of the couple.
Both protesters were charged with misdemeanor mob action for allegedly blocking a sidewalk. They both had multiple cuts and bruises on them and their clothing was torn.
5. October 5th, 2020, - Occupied City Hall - Burke & RPD officer Brandon Mather, under the orders of then ADC Carla Redd, arrested a young black protester. The young woman was tackled to the ground by Burke & Mather then swung so her head hit a metal pole.
In 2021, Burke arrested a community member for allegedly writing in chalk before Stroll on State. This case is still pending.
