Apostolos Sarantopoulos #1932

Apostolos Sarantopoulos has been a Rockford police department officer since March 1999.

Sarantopoulos worked multiple 2020 City Market protests against local police violence.

At the time he was a sergeant that approved of multiple arrests throughout the season beginning on July 31st, 2020 - the First Arrest Week.

On September 11th, 2020, while protestors were legally walking in the cross walk of 1st street & State Street, a driver that was angry at briefly being stopped by the protest began laying on their horn. When a protestor approached the vehicle, the passenger violently swung the door open causing the door to hit the protestor in the throat.

The protestor was taken to Swedish American Hospital by fellow protestors. After City Market, other protestors went to the hospital to check on the injured protestor.

While the protestor was waiting for medical attention, a gunshot victim came into the hospital causing the hospital to go on lockdown. The security told the arriving protestors that they couldn’t come inside but they could wait outside.

Sarantopoulos and his team of RPD officers arrived at the hospital and immediately told the protestors they had to leave. RPD would not provide any reason as to why they had to leave.

One of the protestors tried to get the name and badge number of each officer on scene. When they reached Sarantopoulos, he turned away and threatened to slam the protestor to the ground. The protestor was arrested and charged with obstructing a peace officer and criminal trespass.
