Alexander Fuller has been a Rockford police officer since 2018.
He was one of the responding Rockford Police officers to the arrest of Sage.
On June 27, 2020, Rockford Police Officer Frank Fabiani followed a protester known as Sage. It was alleged that at some point Sage failed to use a turn signal while Fabiani followed behind.
Fabiani initiated a traffic stop, and Sage pulled their vehicle over. Fuller was area partners with Fabiani, so he responded as backup.
When Fuller arrived, he immediately went to Fabiani's car to speak to him through the driver's window.
During their conversation, Sage exited their vehicle and stood next to it. The two officers yelled for them to get back in, to which they replied, No.
The two officers began walking toward Sage. Fuller grabbed at Sage and attempted to turn them around. Fabiani grabbed Sage and performed a leg sweep, taking them to the ground. Once on the ground, the two officers attempted to pin down and hold down Sage.
More officers arrived, including:
James Nachampassack
Jordan Austin
Christopher Pierson
Nathan Milne
It was alleged throughout the arrest that multiple officers repeatedly punched and used homophobic slurs towards Sage. Nachampassack was accused of recording the incident, including the slurs, on his Snapchat.
At one point, it was alleged that Sage attempted to hold Fabiani's gun that was in his holster. In response to this alleged action, Fuller punched Sage three times in the face.
Sage was charged with aggravated battery, attempted disarmament, resisting, and other traffic-related offenses.
After spending the rest of the weekend in jail, the charges pressed against Sage were dropped by then Winnebago County State's Attorney Marilyn Hite Ross.
After reviewing the footage, Hite-Ross pressed battery charges against Fabiani. The charges against Fabiani were dropped after J. Hanley was elected to be the State's Attorney.
